The Art of List Building

Does this sound familiar?

You found a few blogs about how to get started in Internet Marketing. You bought into the hype and saw how much money you can make… all from your laptop sitting on some beach in some exotic location.

So, you quit your job, buy a domain, throw up a WordPress blog site and wait for the money to come rolling in. However, the money does not come “rolling in”. Now what? Why isn’t it as easy as so many claim it to be?

Well, there are probably a hundred different reasons why, but I am going to talk about the ONE most important reason. A list building strategy.

Without someone to sell to, you have nothing.

So if you’re tired of:

  • Failing to make a dime online
  • Spending hours upon hours reading about success stories… except your own
  • Spending money on paid traffic with zero to little results

Then pay attention to what I am about to tell you.

I do not claim to have all the answers, nor can I reveal some hidden secret that will make you millions. All I can do is tell you about what works for me. I started my Internet Marketing career dealing with the same outcomes listed above until I got serious about LEARNING how to build a list strategy. Set Your Expectations

Unless you have thousands of organic visitors to your site or squeeze pages daily, don’t expect that your list will be build for free. It won’t!

You should expect to pay between $1-$2 per subscriber acquisition.

Once your strategy is in place, shoot for $1 per subscriber each month on the revenue side. So if you have built a 1000 person list, you should be making $1000/mo. If you not, something is wrong. Most likely, your list is not “qualified” or “targeted”.

The System

There is a system to begin to build your list. I am going to simply it in this article as there are many more details you will need to learn how to tweak the system and automate it, so it literally runs on autopilot.

There are 3 main steps to this system. Traffic. Capture. Automate.

The first is traffic. Traffic is indeed King. There are many ways to drive traffic to your sites or squeeze pages but essentially there are 2 categories, Free & Paid.

Paid Ads from Facebook, Google and many other PPC Networks.

Organic SEO, by far the most time consuming and will need continuous tweaking to keep up with the ever changing algorithms of search engines.

Social Networks. Use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as much as you can. We all know the power of Social Media, so use it!

I personally use Facebook as my main source of traffic. Here are a few of the results I have had using Facebook’s paid advertising.

As you can see, these particular campaigns were quite successful and fell in the under $2 per acquisition threshold. Not all of my campaigns have these results, but that is the reality of paid advertising. Testing to see what works. Once you find what works, scale it up and ditch what’s not working.

Your Capture Page

Often referred to as a squeeze page, this is usually 1 page you are driving traffic to. This could be a stand alone page, blog post or the recently added Facebook Lead Ads.

There is an art to creating these pages. In it’s simplest form, you want to be keep it short and to the point. Your Ad should have already told the  visitor what they are getting so don’t give them a reason to hesitate. If they are on your page, they want what you have to give. Generally reinforce why they need what you’re giving them, a couple of bullet points about the giveaway and a form to capture their information. Thats it.


If you do not know what an autoresponder is, it is an email marketing platform that allows you to store subscriber information and send manual or automated emails to your list. Autoresponders allow you to automate your marketing, which is the goal.

Once someone subscribes to your list, send them a thank you and a link to the giveaway. You now have a “qualified” or “targeted” lead you can continue to market related products. These can be your own products or affiliate offers.

Rinse & Repeat

Continue to use this strategy for different types of content giveaways. It is important to have a strategy for each “capture” page. This strategy takes time to tweak but once you have it, you are on your way to finally making real money online.
